Book Reviews

“ Tinka Tinka Tihar aligns with our commitment to the rehabilitation and well-being of those under our care. By providing platforms for self-expression, we encourage the inmates to heal, reflect, and ultimately transform themselves into better individuals, ready to contribute positively to society upon their release. I hope Tinka Tinka Tihar serves as an inspiration, not just for those within the prison system, but for everyone who believes in the power of second chances.”

Tinka Tinka Tihar: A  tale of the resilience of women in prisons

En route to West Delhi, your eyes may stumble upon a graffiti wall adorned with the words from “Chaardiwari” (the four walls), a poem penned by Seema Raghuvanshi, a Tihar Jail inmate. The poetry reads “Subah likhti hoon/ Is chaardiwari mein baithi bas tera naam likhti hoon/ Is faaslon mein jo gham ki judai hai/ Usi ko har baar likhti hoon.” [I write in the morning/ Sitting inside this boundary wall, I just write your name/ The separation of sorrow in these distances/ I write the same every time]. These paint flushed walls are the very four walls that fortify Tihar Jail, one of the largest jails in the country.

Conversations about women, their achievements and the progress of the feminist movement often fail to discuss one particular section of women, namely, women in jails. In India, conversations around this topic was enabled and further encouraged by Tinka Tinka Tihar (2013), a collection of poetry written by four women in Tihar Jail. The book was compiled by Dr. Vartika Nanda and  Vimla Mehra (IPS).

Women inmates Seema, Rama, Arti and Riya, whose poetic pieces were published in the book, found this as a medium of creative liberty in a world where they were deprived of it. When Seema learned about her poem being published in a book, she was thrilled and loved telling people about it. As other female prisoners saw her enthusiasm, they also became intrigued and started taking an interest in writing.

With due encouragement from the editors of the book, the women sat together and discussed their writings, building a community of writers in the jail, and subsequently creating a happier environment in the jail post the launch of the book. Since 2013, the book has been published in 6 languages and entered the Limca Book of Records in 2015. In September of 2023, Tinka Tinka Tihar celebrated its 10th anniversary.

Even those who read the most, tend to pick up books based on glamourous reviews and ratings, leaving this genre unrecognized. Books like these are not as widely read as other genres yet they do leave a strong impact on inmates.

  1. I never knew something like reforms for prisons existed until I came to know about Tinka Tinka Tihar. The poems written in the Tinka Tinka Books are not just poems but gives a deeper insight into the life of prisoners. I would really advise everyone to hear the Tinka Tinka Tihar. Hear it once and you will be humming those beautiful tunes throughout. Surprisingly, the song was prisoners. Not only this, but it was also the first of its king song that was shot in prison. All this would have not been possible without Tinka Tinka and Vartika Nanda. Keep up the good work!

  4. Tinka Tinka Foundation and Vartika Nanda to bridge the gap between these two different worlds. Tinka tinka is always telling different stories by its books, poetries, YouTuber videos, or blogs it’s always pleasant to read that these inmates are helping the outside world when the world has judged them. And her books are a great example and representation of prison life. And reformation of inmates actually does exist and to understand you need to open you mind and try to accept new things. I hope these words of Vartika Nanda will reach more people.

  5. The tinka tinka tihar bookis a beautiful book which shows the jail as a happy place this slams the stereotypical mentality to show that jail is a horrible place and all the prisoners are criminals and they don’t deserve anything in life. This is wrong the prisoners are treated like dirts but they are also humans after all they also deserve a life. Even if the prisoners are out of prison they still blacklisted an not given any work or an oppurtunity. The tinka tinka founder DR. VARTHIKA NANDA has brought a change to the system Thankyou so much for the tremendous feat achieved. #vartikananda #tinkatinka #jail #prisonreforms

  6. Tinka Tinka prison reforms movement is truly the perfect and first of it’s kind model for prison reforms in India. The work of the organisation towards the betterment of lives in prison is exemplary. Tink tinka is like the silver lining to dark clouds of rain, the ray of sunlight in the darkness of the four walls of a jail cell. Not only has Tinka tinka given new meaning to the lives of inmates, it gives hope to inmates who are serving life sentences, by instigating in them a hope and fire to showcase their talents and skill work on the version #2 of theirselves, the bettered, hopeful version. This was really needed in a third world country like ours where the system of jailing is so bad that even small criminals come out as bigger and more furious criminals after jail sentences due to the poor condition of our jails. Adding meaning to the lives of men, women and kids in jails through the media of art and literature is truly a noble deed done by Tinka tinka and Dr. Vartika Nanda. #tinkatinka #vartikananda #prisonreforms #jailreforms #humanrights

  7. Tinka Tinka is an umbrella embark on
to connect prisons. The agnostic has repeated the loneliness of the prison again and again. Human sensibilities present there have been caught with great precision. The captives seeking happiness in a deep atmosphere of sadness affect him. Tinka-tinka is taking its link forward and is interlinking the literature being written in the jails of the country. Tinka Tinka became a bridge between the society. Dr. Vartika Nanda is a crusader on prison reforms and the first Indian to have started a continuous project solely on prison reforms. She is the founder of
Tinka Tinka foundation and brings a ray of light full of hopes in the lives of inmates. This initiative address things beyonds all the odd.
She is credited to have curated and created the concept of awards for inmates and prison staff for the first time in India. This is a very unique initiative which no one could even
    thought of.
Two awards exclusively for inmates – Tinka Tinka India Awards and Tinka Tinka Bandini Awards have been instituted by her as part of the effort.
These awards are released every year on the occasion of Human Rights Day.
Her name has been included in the Limca Book of Records twice for her unique work on prison reforms.
Tinka Tinka awards encouraged them to work harder and follow their passion. They are highly motivated by Vartika ma’am efforts. Seeing the encouragement of such prisoners gives us inspiration and we should inspire more such captives to take certain steps in prison. We would like to welcome Vartika Nanda wholeheartedly.

  8. Tinka Tinka Tihar is the first of its kind book that features a collection of poems written by female inmates of the Tihar jail. This book is a collection of the poetic expressions of women that are restricted physically but have free minds. Tinka Tinka is another kind of literature that can be concluded in the prison literature. With a lot of hard work and dedication, Vartika ma’am has established literature for inmates inside the jail, where another exists. Life in jail is totally different from the world outside. Tinka Tinka has more editions of various jails named as: Tinka Tinka Tihar, Tinka Tinka Madhya Pradesh, Tinka Tinka Dasna, and Tinka Tinka Agra.

Tinka Tinka is doing a commendable task. It is the first-ever mission worldwide that focuses to reform life behind bars. Tinka Tinka is the only foundation that has released its own newsletter that will connect jails across India. Also, the Tinka Tinka Book series is the first book that features a collection of poems written by inmates from the prison.

  9. People often wonder what a difference a speck means to a small particle, but when the same particles meet one by one, a picture emerges. ‘Tinka Tinka Dasna’ is the same embossed picture. Tinka Tinka The journey of India’s largest jail ‘Dasna’ after Tihar was started by Vartika Nanda, the author of this book. I applaud her commendable work towards the reformation of Jails in India.
Tinka Tinka’s purpose is to get the people living in prisons out of their pain and hand them over to their dreams. Society has to show a mirror and pray for judicial system to be humane. The society is not able to accept the detainees who have been sentenced to death inside the jail. To which he is clearly entitled.
Vartika Nanda’s much acclaimed Tinka Tinka series of books brings us the reality and pain these inmates endure. I’m glad to have found out about the foundation and it’s noble mission of reformation of Jails in India

    2. Tinka Tinka Tihar has revolutionized the discourse on prison reforms. Through the poems written by four women inmates incarcerated at South Asia’s largest prison facility, it has created a credible bank of information to understand prison life. This book is a must read if you are interested in academia, law and media.

  10. Vartika Nanda is shattering the dehumanized and barbaric image of those incarcerated. Through her work, she is showing that inmates are humans with talent, aspirations, and a will to improve themselves. Her work is a testament to the idea that rehabilitation and not punishment is the answer. Tinka Tinka Tihar is a collection of poems from the incarcerated women of Tihar. Instead of sensationalizing, she has written about the true and lived experiences of inmates and even their children who unfortunately are also lodged inside prisons. She brings a softer side to inmates who are sad because they can’t meet their families, but even the smallest of things gives them joy like music, dancing, painting, etc. #tinkatinka #tinkamodelofprisonreforms #vartikananda #tihar

  12. Reading the book ‘Tinka Tinka Tihar’ was nothing short of an experience in itself. The book is a compilation of the work of women in prison. It is a narrative of their identity, their unique struggles and the uphill battles they face. If you identify as a feminist, I believe that this book will be a truly gratifying read for you. This is an ode to women everywhere who chose to speak up, who chose to give up silence.
