Life is an illusion. I believe that based on the context of the times during which the modern death penalty was being shaped, a big factor was not just retribution or deterrence but a desired simply to see that that killer never kill again. It seemed to many that the choice was between executing them and seeing them back on the street in a few years, and many people opted for execution at least in the case of a few “worst of the worst”.
