Women inmates and their children in jails were the focus of Tinka Tinka Prison Radio’s recent episode posted on 14th May, 2023. This was the 63rd episode of India’s exclusive prison radio broadcast. The episode titled “Mother’s Day – Women Inmates and their Children in Jails” was conceived, narrated, and scripted by Dr. Vartika Nanda. The special episode was dedicated to women inmates in jail who are living in jails with their children, The podcast narrates the lives of these women and children who have been a part of the Tinka Tinka Prison Reforms journey.

Tinka Tinka Jail Radio: Creating Rainbows in Prisons

Tinka Tinka Jail Radio, India’s exclusive prison radio broadcast series, focuses on the untold stories of prisons and inmates in India. It is created by Dr. Vartika Nanda, a media educator and prison reformer who is the founder of the Tinka Tinka Foundation. This movement aims to bring in creativity, positive change, reformation, and healing in prisons through art, culture, literature, and media.

The podcast series features audio narratives of inmates who share their experiences, challenges, aspirations, and emotions in prison life. The podcast series also showcases Tinka Tinka Foundation’s various initiatives and activities in various jails across the country, such as establishing jail radios, training inmates to become radio jockeys, organising events and competitions, distributing books, producing songs, and organising annual ‘Tinka Tinka Awards’ the only awards given to inmates in India for their exemplary work to improve prison life.

Tinka Jail Radio Podcasts: Women and the Story of Children in Prisons

A novel idea of jail radio podcast began its journey in 2020. The first episode shed light onto the darkest corners of realities of prisons where children of women inmates reside along with their mothers. The podcast titled “Children in Prisons” discussed how these children are robbed of a chance at a normal life and lead a life where they are made to feel like offenders due to the custodial environment. The unique Tinka Tinka Prison Radio journey has continued to spread its light across prevalent matters in jail, perhaps the most neglected area in the country as it recently completed its 63rd episode with many more episodes to follow.

Tinka Tinka Foundation: The Beginning of Prison Reformation

Tinka Tinka Foundation is a Public Charitable Trust and a pioneer in the field of prison reforms in India. It has made a significant impact in transforming the lives of prison inmates through art, culture, literature, and media. It was founded by Dr Vartika Nanda, a journalist, media educator, and prison reformer who has dedicated more than a decade to prison reforms.

The foundation strives to bring creativity, positive change, healing, and humanization in prisons by involving the inmates in various activities wherein literary and artistic efforts would be made across the various jails of the country with the constructive use of the tools of mass communication. Its aim is to reconnect the imprisoned to the life and society behind the four walls of the prison that they are meant to be reintegrated into.

Stree Shakti Puraskar awardee Vartika Nanda has penned several books such as Tinka Tinka Tihar, Tinka Tinka Dasna, and Tinka Tinka Madhya Pradesh that capture life in prisons through poems, reports, and stories. Her work on prison reforms has earned her a place in the Limca Book of Records twice. She is also the storyteller and voice behind Kissa Khaki Ka, a podcast series by Delhi Police that is the first of its kind to be run by a police department. The podcast shares the stories of police officers and their work and has crossed more than 70 episodes since its inception.
