Haryana Prisons launched their first Jail Radio
New year has brought cheer for inmates lodged in Haryana prisons. The state of Haryana has launched its first prison radio in District Jail, Panipat. Constructed in 2020, this is a new jail equipped with modern infrastructure. Tinka Prison Radio is inaugurated by Shri Ranjeet Singh, Jail Minister, Haryana, Shri Rajeev Arora, IAS, ACS, Home, Jail Department, Government of Haryana, Shri K. Selvaraj, IPS, Director General of Prisons, Haryana, Shri Devi Dayal, Superintendent and Dr. Vartika Nanda, Founder of Tinka Tinka Foundation.
Inmates of three jails namely Faridabad, Ambala, and Panipat were given extensive training by Tinka Tinka Foundation in December, 2020, following which this radio has been initiated. This prison radio is the brainchild of prison reformer Vartika Nanda who heads the Department of Journalism in Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University.

Haryana’s first prison radio completed three years of its transmission on 16th January, 2024. This radio is now an integral part of the jail. With a broadcast for three hours every day, prison radio programs are eagerly awaited by inmates. Tinka Tinka Jail Radio gives them much-needed relief from their depressive mental state and provides them the opportunity to engage with it either as radio jockeys or as performers. Jail radios in Haryana are the brainchild of India’s leading prison reformer and media educator Dr. Vartika Nanda.
Jail radio in District Jail, Panipat had started with 6 inmates as Radio Jockeys. This radio was inaugurated by Shri Ranjeet Singh, Jail Minister, Haryana, Shri Rajeev Arora, IAS, ACS, Home, Jail Department, Government of Haryana, Shri K. Selvaraj, IPS, Director General of Prisons, Haryana, Shri Devi Dayal, Superintendent and Dr. Vartika Nanda, Founder of Tinka Tinka Foundation. These inmates were selected by Tinka Tinka Foundation (TTF) after a detailed audition in December 2020. Later on, a systematic training workshop was conducted by TTF for inmates of 3 jails namely District Jail, Panipat, District Jail, Faridabad and Central Jail, Ambala. Kashish, Shrawan, Suresh, Surender and Nimatullah. Another inmate Dinesh joined them later. Vishal Sharma, Warder in District Jail, Panipat (Haryana), was recognised for his immense contributions towards increasing literacy in the prison and giving support for Tinka Tinka Jail Radio and was given Tinka Tinka India Award in the year 2022. Conceived by TTF, this year the award was presented in Central Jail, Sabarmati in Gujarat.

Tinka Prison Library: 2021
District Jail Panipat started its Tinka Prison Library to cater to the educational needs of almost 1000 inmates lodged in this jail. The library was inaugurated by Shri Amit Sharma, CJM cum Secretary, District Legal Services Authority Panipat, Shri Devi Dayal, Superintendent of the Jail and Founder of Tinka Tinka Dr. Vartika Nanda. This prison library is a joint initiative of Tinka Tinka Foundation and Deora Seva Nidhi, Kolkata.
Speaking on the occasion Shri Amit Sharma said that this library will pave way to bring legal literacy and awareness in inmates. Shri Devi Dayal said that this initiative has brought immense change in the attitude of inmates. They are taking keen interest in jail radio and library will further add to the reformation process. Dr. Vartika Nanda said that this library is a move to develop reading habits in inmates and fulfil their communication needs.

This is a great initiative by Tinka Tinka. Workshops to train inmates and to develop their talents and creativity is an excellent thing to do. The work of Dr. Vartika Nanda, the founder of the movement of prison reforms in India, is a testament to the idea that rehabilitation and not punishment is the answer.
